Tooth Trouble

Since Christina joined me on the road, life has been pretty good overall. We’ve been working hard, making good money, and learning a lot. And we’ve been much happier, since we’ve been able to spend more time together. However, things aren’t always sunshine and rainbows. Earlier this week, Christina started having some trouble with her wisdom teeth. As they’ve been slowly breaking the gum, they’ve been causing her some serious pain, and they’ve become inflamed. Unfortunately, since she hasn’t been with the company for 90 days yet, she doesn’t have dental insurance, which means we’re going to have to pay for her wisdom tooth extraction out-of-pocket. Fortunately, we’re in a much better financial situation, and we’ll be able to afford it, no problem.

The only real problem comes in scheduling the procedure. Our company likes to keep us on the road a lot, which is normally a good thing, but when you’re trying to schedule a medical appointment, it can be a pain. They’ve been fighting us about taking home-time since I’m her trainer and they have policies against trainers and trainees taking home time together, which I’ve been fighting (considering we’re married and we’re not just trainer/trainee, we’re also Phase 2 team drivers). We’ve been planning to take home time during the Halloween holiday, but I expect our dispatcher will fight us about it. I’ll just have to fight right back. But the more pressing matter is that we’ve got an appointment with a dentist back in our hometown. The appointment is for Wednesday, but right now we’re hauling a load to Illinois, due Tuesday. No way we’ll be able to deliver Tuesday and get back to Texas on Wednesday morning. So I’m hoping our fleet manager will be willing to have us swap the load in order to reach the dentist on time.

After the dentist appointment I’m hoping we can take some home-time for recuperation and relaxation. If they don’t operate right away on Wednesday it’ll probably be because of some infection or inflammation, which means they’ll need to schedule the next appointment about a week out. If that’s the case, we might be home for a while, if the company will even let us take that much time off for a dental problem. I’m hoping they will. In any case, we’ll be able to afford it, but that much time off will put a bit of a strain on the pocketbook for a little while.

So that’s what we’re up to right now. Dealing with a pain in the tooth.

In brighter news, Christina will be joining this blog soon as a co-writer, so you’ll be able to hear her perspective on things. We also hope to save up enough to buy a 4G LTE signal booster, so that we can have more reliable internet on the road. As of right now, we’ve got the 4G LTE mobile hotspot up and running, but it’s not the best at keeping a signal, especially when we’re rolling or when we’re parked among trucks. Which is to say, the only time it works well is when we’re parked away from trucks. Unfortunately, this is a rare occasion, so most of the time the 4G box has troubles staying connected. This makes it difficult to keep up with social media, including this blog. But with a 4G LTE signal booster, we should be able to have a more reliable connection in more places. I’m looking forward to it.

Well, that’s all the news for now. I’ll keep you all updated as the situation develops. Love you all.

  1. Sorry to hear about Christina’s tooth problem I know that can make the easiest of hauls seem to never end. There is a dentist here in Little Elm that gives free exams and x-rays to new customers and trust me my extraction was totally painless. The whole thing came in a little more than $200…. I just checked their wen site, ( http://www.littleelmdentalcare.com/ ) and instead of the free exam and x-ray they are giving $100 for all new customers. Either way i hope you get a run that takes you back home and you can make your appointment.

I am definitely looking forward to reading a woman’s prospective on ‘trucking’ in fact I think some trucking magazines would want articles by female truckers???

    Safe driving
